Video: Understanding HPV prevalence to control cervical cancer: an IARC field study in Armenia

In this new video from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Dr Iacopo Baussano, the leader of the Public Health Decision Modelling Team in the Early Detection, Prevention, and Infections Branch, introduces an IARC-led project taking place in Armenia – the first study of its kind in the country. The project is a field study of the prevalence of infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in Armenia. The results will help local public health officials and medical professionals to target HPV infection and control cervical cancer. In the video, representatives of partner institutions, a local physician, and a study participant also share their perspectives.

This project is being carried out in partnership with Armenia’s National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDCP) and the non-profit organization Fight Infectious Diseases in Emerging Countries (FIDEC).

IARC scientists are conducting field studies in several low- and middle-income countries to assess the local burden of HPV infection and the impact that HPV vaccination could have in reducing the prevalence of HPV infection. These studies are being conducted in collaboration with national ministries of health and local institutions and stakeholders, as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem.
