The role and utility of population-based cancer registries in cervical cancer surveillance and control

A new publication by scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in collaboration with researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) and the National Cancer Institute (USA), presents an overview of the critical role of population-based cancer registries in cervical cancer control. This article is part of a Special Issue of the journal Preventive Medicine, titled “From Science to Action to Impact: Eliminating Cervical Cancer”. The publication of this Special Issue coincides with International Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Awareness Day, on 4 March, and it is dedicated to the more than half a million women per year who are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The authors revisit key concepts of population-based cancer registries and highlight their role in providing a situation analysis of the scale and profile of cervical cancer incidence and survival, and their evolution over time. Linking cervical cancer data to screening and immunization information systems further enables the development of a comprehensive set of measures capable of assessing the short- and long-term achievements and impact of the global strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem.

The initiation and sustainable development of population-based cancer registries, especially in countries with the highest burden of cervical cancer, must be an early step in the scale-up of cervical cancer control activities.
