IARC Monographs Volume 122: Isobutyl nitrite, β-picoline, and some acrylates

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce that the IARC Monographs volume on isobutyl nitrite, β-picoline, and some acrylates is now available online.

This volume includes six monographs: isobutyl nitrite, β-picoline, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, and trimethylolpropane triacrylate.

β-Picoline, a methyl pyridine, is widely used as a starting material for pesticides and pharmaceuticals, and also as a flavouring substance in foods and beverages. Isobutyl nitrite is an intermediate in the synthesis of solvents and fuels, and is used as a recreational drug. The four acrylates evaluated are chemicals with a high production volume that are produced worldwide, and have a wide variety of uses.

Exposure to all the agents considered may occur in different occupational settings and in the general population. An IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of environmental or occupational exposure to these agents.
