The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is expanding its research portfolio in the domain of cancer survivorship and has launched a new Cancer Survivorship website to make IARC research findings and information about related IARC projects more accessible. This work aims to support the development of evidence-based strategies to improve the long-term health and well-being of cancer survivors worldwide.
Cancer survivors make up unique populations with distinct medical needs and risk profiles. Beyond the study of overall and cancer-specific survival, understanding the effects of both the disease and its treatment on other health end-points is essential for the holistic care of people with a current or past cancer diagnosis – not only during treatment but potentially for decades thereafter. These end-points include the risk of cancer recurrence, secondary cancers, and chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, as well as potential impacts on multiple dimensions of quality of life.
This comprehensive approach is within the domain of cancer survivorship, a period that starts at diagnosis and continues throughout a person’s lifetime. As the number of cancer survivors increases worldwide, this research field warrants increased attention.
