IARC holds CanScreen5 kick-off meeting for 19 African and Lusophone countries

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) held a successful kick-off meeting for 19 African and Lusophone countries within the Cancer Screening in Five Continents (CanScreen5) project on 4 December 2025. This opening meeting, which took the form of a webinar, marks an important milestone in strengthening cancer screening programmes across the African region.

The goals of the session were to reconnect with CanScreen5 participants and leaders, share updates on cancer screening activities, and outline the roadmap for the 2025 update cycle. Representatives from 19 countries are participating in this initiative: Angola, Botswana, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Representatives from four of these countries are joining the CanScreen5 initiative for the first time: Angola, Eswatini, Ghana, and Nigeria.

Participants from across the region joined the discussion, building on the strong foundation laid during a previous CanScreen5 training course, which took place in 2020 and enabled the collection of cancer screening data from the African region. These data are now publicly available on the CanScreen5 web repository.

The meeting also featured a special public webinar with a keynote lecture by Dr Joël Fokom Domgue, who provided valuable insights and guidance for participants as they embark on the next phase of the CanScreen5 journey.

The CanScreen5 project continues to expand globally, providing a unique platform for countries to share and compare cancer screening practices. This latest meeting reinforces IARC’s commitment to supporting evidence-based screening programmes and fostering collaboration among countries to reduce the burden of cancer, particularly with its partners in African and Lusophone countries.
