Dr Freddie Bray awarded UICC’s Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Award 2023

Dr Freddie Bray, the Head of the Cancer Surveillance Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), received the Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Award in the Civil Society category at the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2023, held in Long Beach, California.

Dr Bray specializes in estimating the global cancer burden and predicting future trends, and he leads the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR), which is aimed at expanding the coverage and quality of population-based cancer registries in low- and middle-income countries. Dr Bray advocates for stronger international collaboration, including with the World Health Organization, to develop effective data and surveillance policies. He stresses the importance of population-based cancer registries in informing national cancer control plans and narrowing the cancer equity gap in low- and middle-income countries.

UICC’s Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding efforts that contribute to advancing cancer care and control in two categories: (i) UICC full member organizations and (ii) individuals working for civil society organizations. The 2023 award winners were announced at the close of the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit by UICC President-Elect, Ms Ulrika Årehed Kågström, Secretary-General of the Swedish Cancer Society, on 18 October 2023.
