The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is marking Childhood Cancer Awareness Month during September by highlighting the global burden of childhood cancer and IARC’s actions to prevent and address childhood cancer worldwide.
Throughout the month, IARC will publish posts on its social media channels focusing on different aspects of the Agency’s work targeting childhood cancer, such as its role in the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer and its research into the origins of childhood cancer.
According to estimates from the IARC Global Cancer Observatory, in 2020 almost 280 000 children and adolescents (aged 0–19 years) were diagnosed with cancer worldwide and almost 110 000 children died from cancer. However, the actual numbers may be much higher, because in many countries childhood cancer is difficult to diagnose.
