IARC scientists participate in Vatican conference to decrease inequalities in cancer

Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will give lectures on cancer prevention and inequalities in cancer incidence and mortality during the Conference on Strategies to Decrease Inequalities in Cancer Therapeutics/Care and Prevention. The conference, which is hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, is being held in Vatican City on 23–24 February 2023. The conference will explore strategies to address some of the important factors behind inequalities and to improve equal access to cancer therapeutics/care, diagnostics, and prevention.

On the first day of the conference, IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass will deliver a presentation on inequalities in cancer care and prevention. Her lecture will highlight that the greatest proportional increases in cancer incidence and mortality are predicted to occur in lower-resource countries, which are currently undergoing major social, economic, and demographic transitions. Dr Weiderpass will emphasize that efforts to plan, implement, and evaluate resource-appropriate cancer prevention programmes must be considered greater priorities in such countries.

On the second day of the conference, Dr Joachim Schüz, Head of the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch at IARC, will make a presentation about Cancer Prevention Europe, which is a consortium of organizations across Europe that aims to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality through prevention and earlier diagnosis of the disease.
