IARC marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 2022

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and this year the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will highlight three different research projects that demonstrate the impact IARC is having in tackling the global burden of cervical cancer.

The showcased projects are in the areas of (i) vaccination against high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), the causative agent of most cases of cervical cancer; (ii) treatment of cervical precancerous lesions in a resource-constrained setting; and (iii) improving coverage of cervical cancer screening programmes in at-risk populations.

In 2020, an estimated 604 000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 342 000 women died from the disease. High incidence rates and high mortality rates of cervical cancer occur mainly (~90% for both) in low- and middle-income countries. IARC and the World Health Organization are working together with other partners to end cervical cancer as a public health problem through the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer.

Be sure to visit the IARC website regularly during January, or subscribe to the IARC social media channels, to view all the updates to mark Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
