CanScreen-ECIS project comes to a close

The CanScreen-ECIS project, coordinated by scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has concluded. The goal of the project was to develop and pilot a new cancer screening data management system to be integrated into the existing European Cancer Information System (ECIS) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission.

The project’s researchers successfully identified key performance and outcome indicators for breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer screening through a combined process of systematic evidence review and expert consultation. New tools to report the performance of cancer screening programmes, as well as related training materials, were also developed.

Data are made available through a new data warehouse for data submission and analysis, which can be accessed via a user-friendly web application. The warehouse and application enable users to generate visual representations of indicators for screening data, which can facilitate monitoring of trends, shortcomings, and inequalities and can improve decision-making.
