Visit of delegation from Special Committee on Beating Cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was honoured to host a delegation of seven members of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer, who visited IARC in Lyon, France, on 3 November 2021. The Special Committee on Beating Cancer is an organ of the European Parliament and is composed of Members of the European Parliament.

IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass and IARC researchers presented and discussed a wide range of topics with the delegation; until recently, these topics could only be addressed to a limited extent via videoconference format. These included the Nouveau Centre project for IARC’s new headquarters, the latest cancer surveillance data for Europe, evidence to support policies to tackle environmental risk factors and social inequalities, the European Code Against Cancer, and modelling of cervical cancer control in Europe.

The delegation visiting IARC included the committee’s chairperson, Mr Bartosz Arłukowicz, and rapporteur, Professor Véronique Trillet-Lenoir. The visit to IARC follows a visit to the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, where members of the committee met WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the Director of WHO’s Department of Noncommunicable Diseases, Dr Bente Mikkelsen
