Experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the National Cancer Center/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS) coordinated and led the second China ASEAN Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program, held in Nanning, China, on 5–9 November 2018.
The programme included 28 participants from China and countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) such as Thailand and the Philippines, as well as 14 observers from China and countries outside the region.
The goal of the programme is to train health care professionals in cancer screening, prevention, and early detection. The Nanning meeting was preceded by 2 months of online training, which included webinars, 15 eLearning modules, assignments, and the preparation of questions. In Nanning, lectures and debate sessions were interspersed with group work and field visits.
IARC and CICAMS instructors were joined by Dr Gauden Galea, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in China, and by Dr André Ilbawi, Technical Officer from the WHO Department for Management of Noncommunicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention (NVI).
