The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is currently hosting the annual meetings of the two largest worldwide consortia on the etiology of childhood cancer and childhood leukaemia.
The International Childhood Cancer Cohort Consortium (I4C) was founded in 2005 and is based on 10 cohort studies of mothers and children in 15 countries, with more than 390 000 mother–child pairs. The Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (CLIC) was formally established in 2007 and builds on a wealth of data and biospecimens from more than 25 case–control studies with more than 40 000 cases.
Because childhood cancer is rare compared with adult cancer, international collaboration is essential to unravel the causes of these rare diseases. This meeting at IARC is the second time that the two consortia have held joint sessions to discuss areas in which they can complement each other and find synergies for collaborations across the two study designs, as well as jointly discuss knowledge gaps and avenues for future research.
IARC has been involved in the research work of I4C and CLIC for many years. The Section of Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis is a Steering Group Member of I4C and serves as the International Biospecimen Coordinating Centre for I4C. The Section of Environment and Radiation is a member of the Pesticide Working Group of I4C and a member of the Management Group of CLIC and hosts the CLIC Data Coordination Center.
