IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass selected as member of Mission Board for Cancer

Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has been selected as one of the experts on the European Commission’s Mission Board for Cancer, as part of Horizon Europe, the next research and innovation Framework Programme of the European Union.

Under Horizon Europe, which will be implemented in 2021–2027, five research missions have been launched, in the areas of (i) adaptation to climate change, including societal transformation, (ii) cancer, (iii) healthy oceans, seas, and coastal and inland waters, (iv) climate-neutral and smart cities, and (v) soil health and food.

The missions are expected to have a highly ambitious agenda, with the aim of transforming Europe in their respective fields. They will adopt a systemic approach to meeting this challenge, combining new knowledge and technology with a business model, sufficient finance, and solutions to regulatory and governance issues, and will gather and harness skills for social innovation.

The expert groups are now being convened, and Dr Weiderpass has been invited to be one of the 15 experts to work on the Mission on Cancer, which will be chaired by the Nobel laureate Professor Harald zur Hausen.

As part of the Mission on Cancer, Dr Weiderpass will provide expert advice on several areas of cancer research, such as early detection and prevention.
