Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will hold a webinar to launch a new e-learning programme on the Latin America and the Caribbean Code Against Cancer on 18 October at 17:00 CEST (11:00 EDT). The webinar, to be held in Spanish, will feature Dr Carolina Espina and Dr Ariadna Josa of IARC, Dr Mauricio Antonio and Mr Gabriel Listovsky of PAHO, and Dr Eduardo Cazap of the Sociedad Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Oncología Médica (SLACOM).
The e-learning programme is a free, self-directed, and competency-based training course that includes 40 hours of certified training on primary and secondary prevention of cancer for primary health-care professionals, structured around the 17 recommendations of the Latin America and the Caribbean Code Against Cancer. The course will be hosted on the PAHO Virtual Campus for Public Health and will be made available after the webinar. Initially, it will be available only in Spanish. English and Portuguese translations will be made available shortly afterwards.
This e-learning programme is the first comprehensive programme on cancer prevention designed specifically to build the capacity of primary health-care professionals in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is tailored to the specific context of the region in terms of risk factors, cancer incidence and mortality, health systems, and social inequalities.
The first edition of the Latin America and the Caribbean Code Against Cancer was developed under the umbrella of the World Code Against Cancer Framework, an IARC-led initiative to develop Codes Against Cancer to promote cancer prevention globally by world region, highlighting differences in risk factors, cancer patterns, and preventive interventions, as well as economic, social, and cultural conditions.
