Dr Christine Friedenreich

IARC has been the global leader in research for cancer prevention for more than five decades, providing the evidence base to reduce the impact of cancer worldwide.” 

Dr Christine Friedenreich is a cancer epidemiologist who for three decades has been studying the role of physical activity in reducing cancer risk and improving rehabilitation and survival after cancer diagnosis. Dr Friedenreich is the Scientific Director for the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research at Alberta Health Services. She is also the Division Head and an Adjunct Professor for Preventive Oncology at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Dr Friedenreich has held numerous career awards from national and provincial health funding agencies. She was awarded the Canadian Cancer Society’s O. Harold Warwick Prize in 2013, was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2016, and was inducted as a Fellow into the Royal Society of Canada in 2019.

Dr Friedenreich has a long association with IARC. She was a Postdoctoral Research Training Fellow at IARC in 1990–1991, a Senior Visiting Scientist in 2004–2005, the Canadian representative on the IARC Scientific Council in 2018–2021, and the Chairperson of the Scientific Council in 2020 and 2021.
