What went right during the COVID crisis: the capabilities of local actors and lasting innovations in oncology care and research

In a new article, scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partner institutions analyse how oncology care and research were adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Metropole of Lyon, France. The study was published in PLOS Global Public Health.

This is the first study highlighting the positive lessons learned during the pandemic for cancer care in the Metropole of Lyon region, including the lasting innovations that came out of the crisis. This work demonstrates clear adaptations and innovations in (i) new processes and resources to facilitate disciplinary and interdisciplinary work and (ii) the harmonization and streamlining of patient journeys.

The article demonstrates that the necessary adaptations to cancer care were made possible by three core capabilities: practical reason, affiliation, and control of one’s environment. Therefore, health-care institutions and regional authorities can help cultivate these capabilities in both their front-line and management staff to enable health-care institutions to be adaptable and creative and to continue to provide high-quality care in the post-COVID period.
