The Lancet Oncology – Intrauterine device use, cervical infection with human papillomavirus, and risk of cervical cancer: a pooled analysis of 26 epidemiological studies

The present findings on the protective effect of IUD against cervical cancer is yet another achievement of a 25-year old collaboration coordinated by IARC in 15 countries. It is a good reminder that even though the central role of HPV and cervical cancer is well-established, there remain other factors (e.g., contraceptive and reproductive practices, female hormones) that exert an influence on the probability of HPV infection to progress into cervical cancer. They deserve to continue being studied.
