New IARC GICR Collaborating Centre established in South Africa to improve cancer registration in sub-Saharan Africa

Within the framework of the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce that the South African National Cancer Registry (NCR) has become an IARC GICR Collaborating Centre in sub-Saharan Africa.

The official inauguration took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 22 November in the presence of key national stakeholders, including representatives from the Department of Health and the National Health Laboratory Service, and international partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN), and Vital Strategies.

The IARC GICR Collaborating Centre in Johannesburg will build capacity in cancer registration methodologies in the region and will benefit from the considerable technical expertise at the NCR in record-linkage techniques and registration of childhood cancer.

IARC has partnered with the AFCRN from the inception of the GICR to provide a network Regional Hub for Cancer Registration in Sub-Saharan Africa, one of six IARC Regional Hubs, which cover transitioning regions worldwide and 85% of the global population.
