Professor José Eluf Neto (1951–2023)

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is saddened by the passing of Professor José Eluf Neto, an authority on cancer epidemiology research in Brazil, who died on 14 January 2023 in São Paulo.

 

José Eluf Neto was Professor of the Department of Social Medicine of the School of Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil, and a collaborator in postgraduate programmes of the School of Public Health. He proposed and participated in national and international research studies on cancer epidemiology, contributing to advances in cancer control in Brazil and Latin America. He had also collaborated since the 1990s in research consortia hosted by IARC. Professor Eluf Neto was Director of the Fundação Oncocentro of the State of São Paulo, a governmental agency for cancer control in Brazil, from 2011 to 2021, and also a member of the epidemiology group of the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO). He supervised many distinguished Brazilian cancer epidemiologists during their postgraduate studies. Professor Eluf Neto’s friends and students pay tribute to his enthusiasm and passion for teaching and research in epidemiology.

Dr Eluf Neto is survived by his wife, Valéria, and daughter, Ana Carolina.
