Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) are now working in cross-functional Research Teams as part of the new IARC organizational structure, defined in the IARC Medium-Term Strategy for 2021–2025. The Medium-Term Strategy was adopted by the IARC Governing Council during its Sixty-Third Session, on 17–18 May 2021.
The Research Teams include members with relevant expertise from the different IARC Research Branches who work closely together on projects. This enables a more holistic approach to research topics compared with the previous structure of Research Sections, which was less flexible and often examined different facets of a topic individually, rather than in tandem with other aspects or as a whole.
The Branch and Team structure also facilitates international collaboration. For example, the Population-Based Long-Term Surveillance Team includes members from the National Cancer Center Japan.
This new structure ensures that IARC’s activities have a significant and sustainable impact on the global burden of cancer and, ultimately, on the life and health of the world’s citizens. IARC seeks to remain fit for purpose and to ensure that its organizational structure is sufficiently agile to respond to evolving challenges.
More information about currently active Teams is available on the IARC Research Teams webpage.
