Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will present the latest evidence on the links between alcohol and cancer during the Fifth World Health Organization (WHO) Forum on Alcohol, Drugs and Addictive Behaviours, which takes place online on 24–26 June 2025.
The IARC Monographs programme first classified alcohol as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) in 1987. The most recent volumes of the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention series – Volume 20A on Reduction or Cessation of Alcoholic Beverage Consumption and the forthcoming Volume 20B on Alcohol Policies – provide overviews of the effectiveness of selected alcohol policies in reducing consumption of alcoholic beverages at the population level.
The primary goal of the fifth Forum is to boost international partnerships and collaboration to accelerate and sustain public health actions aimed at reducing the health and social burden due to substance use and addictive behaviours.
