IARC at UNGA77 Science Summit

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will be represented at the Science Summit at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77), which opens on 13 September 2022. Dr Zisis Kozlakidis, Head of Laboratory Support, Biobanking, and Services at IARC, will participate in the UNGA77 Science Summit. This hybrid (in-person and online) meeting makes a major contribution to advancing science for the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr Kozlakidis will deliver his presentation on “Biobanking international networks, collaborative projects, and prospects” during the session on “Biobanking in low-middle income countries”, to be held on Tuesday 27 September at 20:00 CEST. His presentation will address issues relating to the development of biobanking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the biobanking networks that facilitate the harmonization of biobanking standards and practices, such as BCNet established by IARC, and the opportunities that biobanks in LMICs can pursue in their efforts to support the systematic transformation of health-care research in the 21st century, with a particular focus on the development of biobanking in relation to digital health. Dr Kozlakidis will provide examples from Bangladesh as a case study, and will discuss how such research infrastructures can support the SDGs, in particular Goal 3: Good health and well-being.
