Liver cancer, predominantly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), accounts for almost 600 000 deaths annually, largely in Africa and Asia. Yet the pathways by which HCC develops and the causes of the marked geographical differences in HCC risk remain to be fully investigated. A newly-published special issue of the journal
Cancer Letters entitled
“Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Worldwide Translational Approach” (editors Drs A. Plymoth, I. Chemin, P. Boffetta and P. Hainaut) provides a comprehensive review of the critical research issues in HCC. This publication follows from an IARC-organised International Liver Cancer meeting in 2007, which reviewed the state of HCC knowledge, identified research priorities and discussed a flexible protocol for an International Liver Cancer Study (ILCS,
