Senior Visiting Scientist Award 2013

One of the objectives of the Agency is to generate collaborative research links with scientists around the world and an effective mechanism for achieving this is by making an award to an established scientist to spend time at the Agency in Lyon.

The recipients of the 2013 highly competitive Senior Visiting Scientist Award are as follows:

Professor Leticia M. Fernandez Garrote from the National School of Public Health, Havana, Cuba, joined the Section of Cancer Information at IARC for twelve months, starting on 15 September 2013 to work with Dr David Forman on the design and development of an education program addressed to cancer registry professionals from Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

Professor John D. Groopman from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD, USA, joined the Office of the Director at IARC for six months, starting on 11 November 2013 to work with Dr Christopher Wild on the molecular epidemiology of aflatoxin exposures: hepatocellular cancer and other health endpoints.

Professor Groesbeck P. Parham from the Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme, Lusaka, Zambia (an affiliate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA), joined the Screening Group at IARC for six months, starting on 21 January 2014 to work with Dr Rengaswamy Sankaranarayanan on analysis and expansion of the Zambian cervical cancer prevention model.

Professor Christopher J. Portier Senior Collaborating Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund, New York, USA joined the Section of IARC Monographs at IARC for six months, starting on 14 October 2013 to work with Dr Kurt Straif on Identifying mechanistic pathways to carcinogenesis.
