Professor Arthur Grollman

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is saddened by the passing of Professor Arthur P. Grollman of Stony Brook University, New York (USA), who died on 17 February 2024 after a long illness.

Professor Grollman was a close, long-term collaborator and friend of IARC, who contributed to IARC Scientific Publications in the past. More recently, he engaged in collaborative research with the Epigenomics and Mechanisms Branch and the Cancer Surveillance Branch, investigating aristolochic acid-associated cancers and other pathologies. He achieved breakthrough discoveries in this field, including one of the first characterizations of the mutational signature of aristolochic acid. His key findings on aristolochic acid-associated cancers were cited by the IARC Monographs and by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Report on Carcinogens, among many other reports.

In 2018, Professor Grollman summarized his collaboration with IARC in a short video prepared for the series “IARC Research Worldwide/IARC in 140 Characters”.

IARC extends its heartfelt condolences to Professor Grollman’s family during this difficult time.
