Leveraging EU initiatives for the development of new approaches to oral cancer prevention

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Centre Léon Bérard will jointly host a workshop for the INTERCEPTOR (interception of oral cancer development) consortium on 11 January 2024 from 8:00 to 16:00 CET. INTERCEPTOR is a European research network funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), led by Professor Pierre Saintigny (Centre Léon Bérard and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) and Professor Senada Koljenovic (Antwerp University Hospital, University of Antwerp). Its main aim is to develop a new multidisciplinary approach and to reorganize disease care management by establishing support for people affected by oral potentially malignant disorders, in order to prevent malignant transformation.

Oral cancer is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and has a profound impact on the patient’s quality of life because of functional, social, and aesthetic sequelae. The early diagnosis and management of oral potentially malignant disorders represent key opportunities for the development of strategies that will prevent oral cancer.

The aims of the workshop include the discussion of European and national initiatives that could be leveraged by the INTERCEPTOR network to develop new approaches to oral cancer prevention. There will also be discussion regarding national programmes implemented to reduce mortality and improve patient quality of life through early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders and prevention of oral cancer. The intention is also to develop synergies between the efforts of European networks and current initiatives on data structuring, with the development of an observational registry.

At the end of the meeting, a round-table including all participants will take place to identify two or three strategic actions to be taken by the INTERCEPTOR network to leverage national and European Union initiatives on oral cancer prevention.
