Documenting the sources and methods of the GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates

A new article provides a synopsis of the data sources and methods used in compiling the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) GLOBOCAN cancer statistics for the year 2020 for 185 countries worldwide. The article was published in the International Journal of Cancer.

The GLOBOCAN estimates, developed for 38 cancer sites by sex and age, use the best available data on cancer incidence from population-based cancer registries alongside mortality data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Mortality Database. The article also presents a summary of the cancer burden worldwide.

A detailed breakdown of the geographical variability in the cancer burden across world regions is provided in a companion article in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

Interactive facilities for the graphical visualization and tabulation of the GLOBOCAN dataset can be accessed via Cancer Today within the Global Cancer Observatory.
