A new study led by scientists from the Section of Cancer Surveillance at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) examined thyroid cancer mortality trends. The study was published in the journal Thyroid on 22 January 2020.
The researchers analysed long-term mortality data from 24 countries on five continents and observed that thyroid cancer mortality has declined over time globally. Overall, they found no evidence of major increases in risk of thyroid cancer mortality by period and by birth cohort for most of the countries studied.
These findings contrast with the rapid increases observed in the incidence of thyroid cancer and support the idea that overdiagnosis plays a strong role in the epidemic of thyroid cancer incidence.
