The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has launched a new website on inequalities in cancer incidence and mortality. The website describes IARC’s ongoing work and specific projects on cancer inequalities. It also provides links to recently published articles and to news and media coverage of this research.
Cancer inequalities are an emerging priority area for IARC, and the Agency has developed a programme of research projects to address related topics. The three main programmatic areas focus on cancer inequalities between countries, cancer inequalities across socioeconomic groups, and inefficiencies in the provision of health-care services.
The way in which trends of cancer incidence and mortality change with social and socioeconomic conditions is a crucial element underlying the cancer patterns that are observed between and within countries. Unequal provision of health-care services often leads to a paradoxical situation in which disadvantaged individuals, who are most in need, cannot fully benefit from health-care services while affluent citizens, who are least in need, may receive too much medical care.
