The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) marks European Week Against Cancer, which occurs in the final week of May each year, with a focus on the European Code Against Cancer. The Code highlights 12 ways in which individuals can actively reduce their risk of developing cancer.
Throughout the European Week Against Cancer, which ends on World No Tobacco Day (31 May), IARC will publish tweets, infographics, and videos highlighting research that underpins and emphasizes the recommendations in the European Code Against Cancer. IARC will also share events where its scientists will speak about the latest findings in cancer prevention research.
The European Code Against Cancer is currently in its fourth edition. It is an initiative of the European Commission to inform people about actions they can take to reduce their risk of cancer, for example maintaining a healthy body weight and reducing or avoiding alcohol consumption. It has been estimated that almost half of all deaths due to cancer in Europe could be avoided if everyone followed the recommendations.
