The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was represented at “From Risk to Action: Preventing Liver Health Crises through NCD Literacy and Care”, a policy event on liver health and cancer prevention organized by the European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA) and held at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, on 4 December 2025.
Dr Harriet Rumgay, an epidemiologist in the Cancer Surveillance Branch at IARC, delivered a keynote presentation at the event. Her presentation focused on the epidemiology of liver cancer in Europe and its major risk factors, including hepatitis B and C viruses, alcohol consumption, smoking, and overweight and obesity. She emphasized why prevention and early detection are critical to reduce the future burden of liver cancer.
The event brought together policy-makers, patient advocates, clinicians, researchers, and civil society representatives to address liver health as a growing public health priority in Europe and highlight the urgent need for prevention strategies, early detection, and integrated care pathways to tackle liver diseases and reduce the burden of liver cancer.
Participation by IARC researchers in events such as this continues to provide scientific expertise to inform evidence-based policies and strengthen public health strategies aimed at preventing cancer across Europe and globally.
