On World Cancer Day 2019, Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), reiterated IARC’s commitment to fighting cervical cancer and fully endorsed the position of the World Health Organization (WHO) on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, confirming that HPV vaccination is safe, efficacious, and critical in the fight against cervical cancer.
Every year more than 310 000 women die from cervical cancer. This figure is expected to increase to almost 460 000 deaths per year by 2040 unless preventive measures are implemented promptly.
For World Cancer Day 2019, IARC is focusing on the projects that it carries out, often in partnership with WHO and others, in an effort to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health concern within the next few decades.
