Dr Hiroshi Ohshima

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently learned of the passing of Dr Hiroshi Ohshima, who died in June 2020. IARC personnel and collaborators extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Dr Ohshima.

Dr Ohshima worked at IARC from 1979 to 2006 as a scientist and became Chief of the Unit of Endogenous Cancer Risk Factors. He frequently hosted young researchers from Japan, and this contributed to the development of close collaborations between IARC and the National Cancer Center Japan, which still continue.

Dr Ohshima was a highly esteemed and renowned scientist who contributed greatly to the scientific achievements of the Agency, as a member of the IARC personnel and as an expert for several important volumes of the IARC Monographs series. He was also much appreciated by all for his personal qualities, as a calm and gentle scientist, and for his integrity. His death is a great loss for the scientific community.
