Oesophageal cancer, predominantly oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, is a common cancer in East Africa. In a new study published in the International Journal of Cancer, researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Moi University, in Kenya, investigate for the first time oral health in relation to oesophageal cancer in Kenya. The results suggest that the combination of dental fluorosis (mottled tooth enamel caused by excessive fluoride intake during early life) and dental decay or tooth loss is strongly associated with an increase in risk of oesophageal cancer.
