A new study by scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partners investigates the role of commercial and locally manufactured alcohols in oesophageal cancer in Kenya. The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, finds that alcohol consumption is a large contributor to the oesophageal cancer burden, particularly in men, even after adjusting for tobacco use. Consumption of the traditional spirit chang’aais associated with a particularly strong increased risk of oesophageal cancer.
