IARC, Erasmus MC, and EU launch IARC factsheets on socioeconomic inequalities in cancer mortality

Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in collaboration with the Erasmus MC (in the Netherlands), the European Union (EU) Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), representatives of the European Commission and of EU Member States, and other stakeholders, are launching new country factsheets created for the Mapping Socioeconomic Inequalities in Cancer Mortality across European Countries (EU-CanIneq) project. The group will launch the factsheets during a webinar hosted by the EU Health Policy Platform team on Friday 23 May 2025 at 10.00–11.30 CEST. The new IARC factsheets provide up-to-date insights into socioeconomic inequalities in cancer mortality by education level for the 27 EU countries plus Iceland and Norway.

These factsheets mark a significant milestone in the EU-CanIneq project and are a valuable addition to the broader efforts to address cancer inequalities in Europe. The webinar and launch will take place just before the start of the European Week Against Cancer.

The goal of the EU-CanIneq project is to map socioeconomic inequalities in cancer mortality across European countries and to contribute to the European Cancer Inequalities Registry (ECIR), which is one of the 10 flagships of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. The ECIR process aims to identify trends, disparities, and inequalities between EU Member States and regions, to help Member States to identify the respective gaps and shortcomings in cancer care and prevention, thus guiding targeted investments and interventions at the EU, national, and regional levels.
