The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will be represented at the Science Summit at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78), which opened on 12 September 2023. Dr Zisis Kozlakidis, Head of Laboratory Support, Biobanking, and Services at IARC, will participate in the UNGA78 Science Summit. This hybrid (in-person and online) meeting makes a major contribution to advancing science for the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr Kozlakidis is convening a session titled “Science in and with the Middle East”, in collaboration with the Qatar Precision Health Institute. The Qatar Precision Health Institute was recently launched with the vision to help shape Qatar’s health care by implementing precision medicine, building on its key foundational infrastructures, the Qatar Biobank and the Qatar Genome Programme. The session is supported by the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations and will take place on Friday 29 September at 15:00 CEST.
The presentations in the session will address issues relating to precision health, answering key questions such as “How do we translate genomics information into actionable data in the clinics?” and “How do such approaches impact the overall health and wellness of a population?” There will be a particular focus on the development of digital health ecosystems, with examples provided from the Middle East, and how such infrastructures can support the SDGs, in particular Goal 3: Good health and well-being in the 21st century.
