IARC scientist visits study sites in Republic of Korea to assess progress of gastric cancer prevention research

Dr Jin Young Park, the Team Leader of the Gastric Cancer Prevention Team at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), recently travelled to the Republic of Korea to take part in a symposium and meet research staff and scientists from the National Cancer Center of the Republic of Korea (NCCK). Scientists from IARC and NCCK discussed the progress of the Effect of Helicobacter pylori Eradication on Gastric Cancer Prevention in the Republic of Korea (HELPER) study.

The HELPER study is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted by NCCK in collaboration with IARC to evaluate the effect of H. pylori eradication for gastric cancer prevention in the Republic of Korea among a study population of almost 12 000 people. IARC is actively participating in the study by conducting regular site visits to the 12 study centres for successful follow-up and organizing meetings with the international Data and Safety Monitoring Board to safeguard the interests of study participants and ensure the scientific validity of the study. Researchers from IARC and NCCK visited HELPER study sites in Busan and Chuncheon and conferred about the next meeting of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board.

Dr Park also spoke at the 31st Annual Meeting of the Korean College of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research and International Symposium on Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Diseases and the 19th Korea–Japan Joint Symposium on Helicobacter Infection (HUG 2023). This meeting is a major academic gathering for research on Helicobacter and upper gastrointestinal diseases. At HUG 2023, Dr Park received the Best Oral Presentation Award for her presentation on IARC’s role in the Accelerating Gastric Cancer Reduction in Europe through H. pylori Eradication (EUROHELICAN) project.
