IARC calls for nominations of agents to be evaluated by the IARC Monographs programme

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is inviting the general public, the scientific community, national health agencies, and other organizations to nominate agents for review by the IARC Monographs programme during 2025–2029. Nominations may include chemicals, mixtures, occupations, physical agents, biological agents, personal habits, and any other agents suspected of causing cancer and to which exposure is potentially preventable.

To nominate an agent for review, you are asked to complete the online nomination form (one agent per form) and the accompanying World Health Organization Declaration of Interests form.

The Advisory Group to Recommend Priorities for the IARC Monographs during 2025–2029 will convene on 19–22 March 2024. IARC is accepting nominations of agents to be considered at this meeting until 30 November 2023.

IARC regularly convenes international, interdisciplinary Advisory Group meetings to review all public nominations and to recommend agents considered to be of high priority for evaluation. Priority is determined in line with the Preamble to the IARC Monographs on the basis of:

(a) Whether this would be the first time the nominated agent has been evaluated and whether there is potential human exposure and evidence available for assessing its carcinogenicity.

(b) For an agent evaluated in a previous monograph, whether there is new evidence of cancer in humans or in experimental animals, or mechanistic evidence to warrant re-evaluation and review of the current classification.

(c) For an agent reviewed in a previous monograph and established to be carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), whether there is new evidence of cancer in humans that indicates a possible causal association with additional tumour sites.

IARC is also seeking nominations of experts to join the Advisory Group. Eligible scientists generally have published significant research related to carcinogenicity of environmental, behavioural, or occupational factors that can increase the risk of human cancer, or in exposure characterization for carcinogens. More information on how to apply is available on the IARC Monographs website. The deadline for nominations to join the Advisory Group is 31 July 2023.
