Launch of digital atlas of visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid for screening, triage, and assessment for treatment

To mark the official launch by the World Health Organization of the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce the launch of a new digital atlas, the Atlas of visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid for screening, triage, and assessment for treatment.

The objectives of the new atlas are to describe the use of visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid (VIA) as a primary screening test or as a test to triage women who test positive for oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types, and to explain how application of dilute acetic acid to the cervix can help in determining eligibility for ablative treatment.

In a video to accompany the launch, Dr Partha Basu, Head of the Screening Group at IARC, presents a detailed overview of how to navigate the atlas. The atlas, which is freely available on the website of the Screening Group, offers a wide range of digital resources, including videos, case studies, and quizzes.

Cervical cancer screening followed by treatment of screen-detected precancers and cancers is a key strategy, along with vaccination against HPV, to eliminate this deadly disease, which kills more than 300 000 women per year worldwide. The new atlas of VIA is a tribute to the life, work, and memory of Dr Srabani Mittal, who dedicated her career to cancer control in general and cervical cancer screening in particular.
