The relative and attributable risks of cardia and non-cardia gastric cancer associated with Helicobacter pylori infection in China: a case–cohort study

Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partner institutions in the United Kingdom and China undertook a case–cohort study nested within the prospective China Kadoorie Biobank to measure Helicobacter pylori biomarkers and estimate the number of cases of gastric cancer attributable to H. pylori infection in China. The study was published in The Lancet Public Health.

The researchers provide robust new evidence on the etiological role of H. pylori in both non-cardia gastric cancer and cardia gastric cancer in China, where H. pylori infection is widespread. In this population of adults older than 30 years, 78.5% of non-cardia gastric cancer cases and 62.1% of cardia gastric cancer cases could be attributed to H. pylori infection. This corresponds to an estimated 340 000 cases of gastric cancer due to H. pylori infection in China per year.

These findings have implications for public health initiatives. Population-based H. pylori mass eradication programmes through testing and treatment should be considered as a key strategy for gastric cancer prevention in China and other high-risk settings globally.

The findings will be discussed during a webinar organized by the journal The Lancet Public Health at 9:00-11:00 CET on 16 December.
